Becky Sinclair held the wheel in one hand and her phone in the other. “What do you mean, they don’t have one?” she yelled, as she slowed down to take a corner. “They’re the State Police.”

“Their helicopter is down for maintenance,” Barbara told her.

Of all the fucking times.

“They can’t only have one.” Sinclair opened up now that she was on the straight. She hadn’t heard from Thorpe or Savage since that last short call hours ago. They’d be waiting for a chopper and she couldn’t get one to them. What a disaster.

Despite several calls, neither Thorpe nor Savage picked up. Straight to voicemail. They were out of range again, or their phones had been switched off or destroyed. Regardless, there was no way to contact them about the delay.

“The nearest helicopter is in Denver,” Barbara replied. “It’d take too long for them to get it down this far south.”

Crap. Now what?

“What do you want me to do?” Barbara’s voice was weak. They were all worried about the team in the mountains.

“I don’t know.” Sinclair approached an unmarked turnoff and veered hard left, causing the tires to screech and spin as they left the paved road.

“Where are you?” Barbara asked. With Littleton in the hospital, the small sheriff’s department was empty except for her and Barbara.
